Patients are being admitted to hospitals for overdosing due to dental pain from Paracetamol. According to a study in the British Dental Journal dental pain contributes significantly to acute medical admissions as a result of accidental paracetamol overdose (a third of all admissions).

The self medication for dental problems can be problematic and swift dental advice for management of dental pain can help avoid such admissions. More importantly the safety of patients can be guarded by educating patients, with the study highlighting that access to dental emergency care can be difficult, especially during the working week for the studied cohort. A ratio of 2:1 weekday/weekend attendances was observed for paracetamol overdose
